Kalamazoo Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services invites you to attend Youth Mental Health First Aid 8-hour certification training. Youth Mental Health First Aid is a groundbreaking public education program that helps the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.  After taking this course you will be equipped with a five-step action plan which includes the skills, resources and knowledge to assist someone who would benefit from professional, peer support or social support.  Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people.  More information about Mental Health First aid can be found by clicking here.

This free event is a wonderful opportunity for Southwest Michigan legislators, community members, individuals and families receiving services, providers and professionals to come together to discuss upcoming changes to our healthcare environment. There will be time allowed for legislator responses to agenda items, as well as a question and answer period for each topic where attendees will be able to address legislators about the topics discussed.


The Coalition for Excellence in Mental Health is a group of local agencies that includes provider agencies, interested community members, persons who receive services and their family members, including Advocacy Services for Kids (ASK); Disability Network Southwest Michigan; Kalamazoo Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (KCMHSAS); National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI); and Residential Opportunities, Inc. Each year the Kalamazoo Wraps’ National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day Carnival is bigger and better.  Over 2,800 were in attendance last year!

This year’s event will continue to focus on education regarding children’s mental health and awareness of the services available for youth and their families.  This event also strives to reduce the stigma of mental health issues.  The event is open to the public and is entirely FREE!  Attendance, Food, Games, Prizes and Entertainment are all included.
