Assessment and Evaluation
Psychological
An assessment is conducted by a psychologist in order to assess an individual’s ability to process information. This includes cognitive abilities, intelligence testing, and identifying evidence of emotional disorders.
Psychiatric
An assessment is conducted by a psychiatrist (who is a licensed medical
doctor). A psychiatric assessment typically occurs if a psychiatric diagnosis is required and when medication might be indicated.
Developmental
A pediatrician trained in child development or behavioral pediatrics will conduct these assessments. This assessment typically includes a comprehensive review of the child’s family history, birth history, medical and medication history, developmental milestones and any physical or neurological milestones. This assessment is used to determine if there is a possibility of prenatal or early childhood trauma, including exposure to drugs, alcohol or other chemicals, delayed fine-motor development or possible epilepsy, which in turn affects behavior.
Neuropsychological
A neuropsychological assessment is done to determine how a child’s brain and nervous system affects how he or she thinks and behaves. This will help determine the child’s functioning in the areas of motor, rhythm, tactile, visual, receptive and expressive speech, writing, reading, arithmetic, memory, intellectual processes, and right and left brain functioning. This assessment is completed by a psychologist trained in neuropsychology. |
