School Based Prevention Services for Children & Families

Kalamazoo Community Mental Health Services and Kalamazoo Public Schools.  A collaborative approach between Kalamazoo Community Mental Health Services and Kalamazoo Public Schools.  Partnering to meet children's mental health needs.

The school-based prevention initiative was developed in response to children's needs.  Two full-time clinical mental health specialists are available to work closely with school staff (teachers, specialists, administrators) to identify students with unmet mental health needs and facilitate entry into services as needed.  Specialized curriculums can be developed geared to meet the needs of staff and students.  Fact sheets on disabilities can also be provided.

Is there a child in your classroom who:

  • Seems withdrawn?
  • Exhibits trouble controlling impulsivity?
  • Is Aggressive?
  • Shows decline in school performance?
  • Appears inattentive or "daydreams"?
  • Acts sad, nervous or overly emotional?
  • Talks about death or suicide?
  • Displays inappropriate sexual behavior?

What YOU can do

While each school environment varies in their approach to problem solving, all schools have building team or staff meeting opportunities.  Check with your school representative or call your mental health liaison for consultation and guidance.  Parents electing to participate are also involved from the onset to encourage the family drive team process.
