Services for Persons with Developmental Disabilities
Professional and caring support and services are available for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Kalamazoo Community Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services will work with the individual, their family, friends, and others to address their needs.
Developmental disabilities are severe, chronic conditions that occur before the age of 22 and are attributable to physical and/or mental impairments. Examples of disabilites include mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and autism. The condition must also result in substantial functional limitation in three of more of the following major life activities:
- Self care
- Speech and language
- Learning
- Mobility
- Self-direction
- Ability to live independently
- Economic self sufficiency
Who can receive services?
If an individual with a developmental disability needs support, and lives within Kalamazoo County, they may be eligible for services. Kalamazoo Community Mental Health Services is the service provider for Medicaid recipients.
Our Access Center staff will help determine whether the individual qualifies for services. Once this has been determined, our staff will meet with the individual to discuss needs and desired outcomes.
Supports and services are provided to promote maximum independence, community connections, and quality of life.

- Family education and support
- Respite
- Enhanced health care services
- Support coordination/case management
- Community living support
- Supported emplyment

How much will services cost?
Fees for service are based upon your ability to pay or health insurance coverage. No one will be denied services because of an inability to pay.
