Supported Education
Supported Education is a program that was developed to help students with psychiatric disabilities succeed in college. To enter the program you must have a psychiatric diagnosis and have been receiving treatment for at least one year. All you need is a letter from your Psychiatrist with your diagnosis to get into the Supported Education Program.
Each college has at least one disabled student service worker. Once the disability office receives the letter from the psychiatrist, the student is automatically eligible for accommodations.
What are accommodations?
Accommodations include but are not limited to the following: early registration for classes, using a tape recorder in class, help taking notes in the classroom (dyslexia), bringing a beverage to class, special seating in the classroom, extended time taking test or a testing format that meet the students needs. Whatever barriers that might be in the way of a student success, an accommodation maybe granted as long as it is a reasonable and doesn’t provide an economic hardship to the college. No accommodations maybe granted without a letter from the psychiatrist documenting the mental disorder being experienced by the student.
